Slow, thirsty, uncomfortable, camp, handle terribly, faulty (it will be faulty). Also the only thing more imasculating than driving one is having to take it to Renault to have a headlight or indicator bulb changed (which you will have to, about twice a week) unless you have the time and inclination to faff about doing it yourself (which you won't wnat to becuase you might break a nail, which will be a concern for you, becuase you'll own a Megane Cabrio).BMW all the way... Build quality and electrical/mechanical reliability though, run for the fking hills!If the 307 is anything like our 308 I'd imagine you'll find the ride harsh, badly damped, the driving position an uncomfortable hybrid between VW Transporter and Golf, and the gearbox loose, indirect and lazy. It has a long history in making them. This certainly heritage bodes well for the 308 CC. There were coupé-cabriolet Peugeots before the second world war, even; the 401, 601 and 602 Eclipse models pioneered the format in the 1930s. Advanced as they were, the Eclipses were expensive, low-volume models, however: the company’s post-war coupé-cabriolets have been built in far larger numbers. However, the original year 2000 206 CC nearly didn’t happen at all. The company was concerned that this complicated, relatively high-cost small car would not sell in enough volume to turn a profit. Spurred on by the success of the 1996 Mercedes SLK though, which proved the readiness of the European market to buy retractable hardtop convertibles again, Peugeot took the risk – and was duly rewarded with the generous spoils so often earned by those first to a new market niche. Not that the original 206 and 307 CC were flawless; patchy roof reliability, floppy bodies and compromised packaging undermined their functionality, but not enough to prevent them from gathering a following strong enough, even, to translate into particularly laudable secondhand values. Peugeot has since worked hard to purge the 207 CC of its predecessor’s shortcomings, and with some success. The question here is whether it has repeated the feat with the 308 CC, the larger C-segment convertible offered up against Renault’s Megane CC and VW’s Eos. Subscribe Peugeot 308cc 2009-2014 First drives Having an electrically folding steel roof that turns a cabrio into a de facto coupe is hardly big news, but a system that’s no less impressive for its familiarity. And the newly arrived Peugeot 307 CC’s ability to contort its metal roof into the boot is precisely what’s going to make it such an enticing prospect. Metal roof in place the Pug’s coupe pretentions aren’t too far wide of the mark either. Edging into illegal speeds some wind noise creeps into the cabin but at licence-friendly pace you’re well isolated from the outside world. After waiting 25 seconds for the hood to cantilever into the boot things aren’t altered a great deal either. You’ll feel slightly more shimmying through the wheel and a corresponding corruption in ride quality, but even in fresh air form it’s commendably refined. What you don’t get though is what is always welcome with wind in your hair motoring – a bit of pizzazz. While the 307CC’s softish gait means a good ride and it spears through corners competently – sluggish steering and ordinary agility means it’s never going to be responsible for upping coronary activity. Part of the problem too is a lack of urge. The base 136bhp version we tested sounds promising until you learn that there’s 1457kgs to haul around, 238kgs more lard than the hatchback version matched to an already rev-greedy engine. So making inspired progress means hanging onto gears, ruining the hushed demeanour in the process. But you get high levels of kit for your £18,300, there’s room for four, a pleasant and comfortable cabin and a decent boot – even if it’s halved when the roof’s down. In fact, the only block to buying one could be that the prettier Renault Megane CC, also with a folding metal roof, arrives in a matter of weeks. The first one has a Peugeot-engineered powertrain under the hood, a 4-cylinder, 16-valves 109hp unit, while the other one gets its power and torque from a 4-cylinder, 16-valves 112hp engine designed by Renault. Safety The first thing to look into here would be the results from European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) tests performed on the two cars. Good thing is that both vehicles got tested, with the Renault being a slightly better choice apparently. Moving further on, let's take a closer look at some additional safety-related facts.
